Cheerleaders are loud
Kyle and I hired ourselves out to be Cheerleader photographers for an outfit called LightSpeed Photos. The event was at the Hot Springs convention center. Basically, we sat near a stage and shot everything that moved. During a two minute routine, I would shoot 100 frames. A guy would run by, take our card and give us another one. We would then do it again.
About 1000 times!!!
The girls were very loud. I wore earplugs and it was still deafening.
OK. This whole event was weird. First of all, everyone acted like this was a sport. It is not a sport. It is simply an activity. Like bowling and softball. The youngest participants were about 5 years old. The parents went wild. It reminded me of baby beauty pageants and Jon Benet Ramsey.
It is also a money pit. You have to pay for the lessons, the uniforms (and they had many), the entry fees, travel, hotels, meals. Then they hawk photos and merchandise. They even were selling an official program and those light up necklaces that go dead in a few hours.
What is the payback? I am sure the girls (and some guys, sheesh) learn some atheletic moves and gain some confidence performing. But I really think it is an ego boost for the parents. These folks were crazy. In the practice room they were yelling at the 5-year olds telling them they were not taking this seroulslu enough.
The event lasted 15 hours. We only stayed for the first 11.
I wonder who won...
